The blacksmith was responsible for ensuring the correct functioning of peasants’ and artisans’ tools, and the production of new blades or metal objects, as well as the very important job of shoeing working animals. He made the hoops for wagon wheels and barrels, sickles, spades and pitchforks, and also performed the delicate operations of metal casting and forging household and work tools. The blacksmith also cast and applied horseshoes to mules and horses, as well as cleaning and dressing the hooves and legs of the animals.
